World of Warcraft TCG - Traps! (Part 1)

One of the fun mechanics in the World of Warcraft TCG is the concept of the Trap card – something that only the hunter class has access to. At the moment, Traps are a card that may cost no resources to play, if played in response to attack on a hero (otherwise they can be played as normal).

This provides a unique opportunity to play some cards outside of the resource curve, something that the hunter seems to specialize in. Although hunters are still not really competitive in the metagame right now, it is without a doubt that if and when they do, traps will be part of their lineup.

This article will explore the list of traps available to hunters, and my rating on each in constructed play. I’ll list a rating after my comments, on a scale of 1 (worst) to 10 (best). I’ll put aside considerations of hero requirements while making this subjective scale; as that would involve also rating the hero behind the card.

Conflagration Trap

This newest trap is horrible; simply put. It doesn’t deal with the attacker like other traps, nor does it really help you turn a losing situation into a winning one. Really – it simply may prove a “little annoying” to your opponent, who is most likely able to play around it. The best use I’ve seen for it is to attach it to an attacking Weldon Barov, and then at the start of each of your turns you can still attack, as his tokens are destroyed. But Weldon Barov will not attack your hero, because a smart player will fear traps that can simply destroy him instead.

Rating: 1/10

Death Trap

This amazing trap destroys the attacking ally, and does 1 point of splash damage to everything else in play. An excellent anti-rush card, its only drawback is that you have to be a Traitor hero; but that’s acceptable for the power of the card. Recently, though, Explosive Trap has overshadowed this card as it seems better overall at any time of the game.
