Warhammer 40,000 Armies - Part 7, Dark Eldar
Date: 18 Dec 2009
Today's article will be looking at the Dark Eldar.Long ago, before the Imperium of man was fully realised; The Eldar ruled the galaxy. But they fell to decadence, and a Chaos God of excess and pleasure was born from their emotions. This new God fed upon their souls, ravaging their race and destroying their worlds. After suffering such losses, the Eldar split into two main factions. The Eldar who forgo all pleasure and avoid the God who thirsts for their souls, and the Dark Eldar who freely give in to all pleasure and please the God Slaanesh in return for their safety from his wrath.
On the table-top, the Dark Eldar are a force designed for hit and run tactics. They excel at speed, reaching the enemy before they have a chance to counter-attack and then getting away before they suffer too many losses. They're capable of laying down a lot of covering fire before they charge straight into an opponents lines and have a range of powerful special characters to choose from. With these very vague things in mind, time for pros and cons:
Pros:
- Very cheap units
- High initiative, lots of close combat support
- Cheap heavy weapons that are incredibly useful for covering fire
- Specialist units for every occasion
Cons:
- Low armour and very vulnerable to being shot back at
- Decade old codex means that several units are now redundant, making writing army lists very one-dimensional.
- A large portion of the Dark Eldar range is only available as metal models, making them expensive to buy and maintain
The Dark Eldar are in dire need of an update to their codex now, ten years since their release.
Ack! Out of space again. My next review is going to be something fishy.
