Warhammer 40,000 Armies - Part 5, Tyranids
Date: 14 Dec 2009
I thought I'd get the 'Nids out of the way before their new codex gets released. I'll be covering them again in January once I've got my hands on that delicious looking new codex. Now, the Tyranids are an almost unstoppable force of mindless evil. They're millions of mindless, insect-reptile hybrids that are all connected under the will of one Hivemind. This same shared mind drives them to consume biomass so that it might be processed into yet more Tyranids. They have arrived from another galaxy and are cutting their way into the Imperium's space with a determination to consume everything in their path.
On the table-top, the Tyranids act exactly as they do in the fluff. They can field a huge amount of small, cheap models or a few large but unstoppable models. Their unique weaponry, the majority of which can re-roll to wound, can be used to confuse the enemy and try to keep the field advantage and their monstrous creatures are nigh-on unstoppable, easily cutting down smaller enemies in combat. I'm running out of words so I'm jumping straight into the pros and cons!
Pros:
- Cheap units
- Powerful monstrous creatures
- Easily capable of out-swarming an opponent
- Synapse rules allowing smaller creatures to ignore instant death and leadership tests
Cons:
- Low statline and armour
- Reliant on Synapse to do anything
- Lack of transport and mobile armour
Currently, the Tyranids are a fairly balanced army and are still capable of taking on high-tier lists using very simple lists of their own, the most prominent of which is known as 'Nidzilla, consisting of Carnifexes and Hive Tyrants.
Anyway, out of time/space! My next Army Review is going to consist of something closer to the dark side.

I've been thinking about doing breakdowns of all the codices that have been released since I reviewed their predecessors. Keep an eye out for them.
