Warhammer 40,000 Armies - Part 1, Space Marines
Date: 4 Dec 2009
Right, I'm going to do quick reviews of the various armies in 40k, mostly because it's all I can think about today.Part 1 will be taking a look at Space Marines.
So, the Adeptus Astartes, they're some pretty cool guys, eh? They're without fear and crush the foes of the God-Emperor before them in the name of the Emperor and the Imperium of Mankind. I've only got 230 words left so I'll dive straight into their table-top pros and cons.
Pros:
- High armour saves and have high stats for basic infantry models.
- And They Shall Know No Fear special rule.
- Easy to build and paint, especially good for beginners.
- With the Black Templar, Blood Angel, Dark Angel and Space Wolf codices, this single army can be surprisingly varied.
- Easy to figure out strategies and generally well-rounded on the battlefield with plenty of options.
Cons:
- A full squad of infantry can bite more into your points limit than you expect from time to time.
- Lack of obvious conversions other than "Heroic pose" or "Dead".
- Not the most customisable army ever.
- Lack of long range support, forcing the player to make a move.
Overall, I like Space Marines as an army, I think they're quite well-balanced and since they're easy to pick up and learn with (Assault on Black Reach <3), it's possible to put together a very capable list without having to sink too much money into it and they're not incredibly over-powered so there are a lot less people moaning at you for using an overpowered army.
Right, that's today's short army review done. Tomorrow look forward to something else with a tasty 3+ save.
