Monsterpocalypse Voltron: Starter, Expansion, and Stand Alone?

Ready to form Voltron and protect the city! That’s right, Privateer Press’ monstrous game of destructive proportions is back with another expansions based on the 80’s hit Voltron: Defender of the Universe. The expansion itself sells as a stand alone “starter” for the game at $40 (€32 ), but contains everything needed to play a game of Monsterpocalypse (aside from the buildings) that you would only have one set of in a regular starter for the game. It features two monsters (both morphers), Voltron and Lo-Tron on a space themed map with asteroid and sun hazards in place of the usual buildings that the monsters slam each other into. When it comes to units, Privateer includes five copies of two brand new figures, one for each faction: Galaxy Garrison Cruiser and the Skull Ship, both unit’s stats represent each other but for a starter set they are easily playable in any tournament setting; with a blast stat of three and a boost of one, that’s a better base stat than we’ve seen on some elites in the game (without boosts of course).

Now, I must say, Privateer Press really knows how to advertise a game. Whether it be a major project or just a new expansion, Privateer takes advantage of every moment to bring new players into their game, and yet again they have done this with the new Voltron game as they have advertised it in every way possible to the gaming world. Whether it has been as a stand alone game, a new Monsterpocalypse expansion, or just a way to let fans of the series get that sense of nostalgia through this game and then allowing those who would’ve never seen Monsterpocalypse, discover it through Voltron. It has even turned an entire community of Heroclix players to adding a Monsterpocalypse section to their website, which has actually turned into a pretty good community in the two weeks its been up. Its almost shocking how many players one licensed expansion can add to the game, this is the reason games such as the Clix series have done so well throughout their time.
