First Look: Resident Evil Deck-Building Game

Picture this: you buy a new TCG, read through the rules, and it turns out that the game is just a carbon copy of another game you already play. Plus, to add insult to injury, the decks played in the game are exactly the same just like those other games. Wouldn’t it be nice to get a game that changes every time you play it? Luckily for us, Bandai has come through with a huge burst of originality with the brand new “Resident Evil: Deck-Building Game (DBG)” which debuted a week ago at GenCon Indy.


 

The game itself is based off the video games of the same name made by Capcom and uses a gameplay system unique to most avid TCG enthusiasts. The “Deck-Building” system is based on creating the deck as you play through the game by buying the cards you need with gold earned through killing infected. The cards you buy are the weapons needed to kill higher level infected and eventually win the game. Much like the video games of the Resident Evil series. where you purchase items from the merchant in order to make the game easier with new weapons. This concept of buying weapons/items into your deck and creating it from scratch adds a whole new concept of strategy making it so the greater mind wins.

In this new game, there are multiple styles of gameplay, much like a video game. A Story Mode, Versus Mode, and a Mercenary Mode as told by Bandai themselves. Each mode is unique in its own way, in Story Mode for example, you and the other players must fight through the infected (like the video game) until a boss is hit such as Nemesis and then the game ends. Versus Mode is your basic player versus player style as with any card game out there and the final mode, Mercenary is supposedly a time-based game in which players race to kill the most infected. Remember, this is just information I heard from friends who demo’d the game at GenCon, I sadly didn’t hear about until after the exhibit hall closed and missed the opportunity.
