Bug Alert!
Date: 15 Dec 2009
So not so long ago Games Workshop announced that in February, the Great Devourer returns to om nom nom our galaxy. The Tyranids are one of the seemingly less common 40k armies, though they're infamous for being (probably) the best example of the swarm army type – hordes upon hordes of cheap, expendable creatures clogging up the deployment zone, rearing to go at the enemy, their sheer number guaranteeing something at least reaches the opponent. But of course, with the news come many new additions to the Tyranid arsenal, giving them more options than either “overwhelm the enemy with numbers” or “throw Godzilla at them”. First, lets start with the new releases – another batch of beautiful models as expected from Games Workshop are accompanying the new Codex. The Venomthrope is a wonderful amalgamation of lictor, zoanthrope and tentacle monster, whilst the Hive Guard obviously mean business with their heavy-duty cannons. Of course, the most striking new miniature, and one that is sure to start appearing on tables come February, is the awesome new plastic Trygon – a great, giant, snakelike burrower, able to strike anywhere on the battlefield from underground.
Of course, in the kit comes the option to make it into a genetic variant called the Mawlock. What does that do, I hear you ask? Well let me put it like this: if you've ever seen Tremors or Dune, it's kind of like that. Not only does it strike form underground, eating any infantry that happen to be above it when it emerges, it can then burrow underground to launch further attacks!
Not taken with the idea of a giant worm? Then how about the news that Carnifexes now come in broods? Yep, those hulking behemoths can now be fielded in packs, just like the Imperial Guard Russes. Or perhaps you'd prefer a more balanced army? If so, then the rumors of an all Warrior army being possible under the new rules should make your day – as well as the news that standard Warriors are a possible troops choice in the new Codex.
Many Games Workshop stores are likely to hold special weekends themed around the great intergalactic locust horde next year, showing off the new miniatures and Codex. Drop by and see for yourself if there's anything there to improve your Hive Fleet, or how to counter it!
