Everybody knows Batman is Bruce Wayne and Robin is Dick Grayson, and everybody’s known that for years. This hasn’t actually been true since the mid eighties in the main comic, and especially not true since Bruce Wayne died last year. Here below is a quick run down of the five, yes five, Robins that there have been so far and a cheat sheet to let you know who’s who and who’s dead

Robin 1: Dick Grayson
Dick was a circus child performer whose parents were brutally murdered during a trapeze act in front of the full audience including Bruce Wayne. Bruce took the orphaned boy in and made him his ward, and eventually took him on as a crime-fighting partner in a very revealing shorts / tights / cape combo.

Dick then goes on to meet with other child sidekicks (there was a spate of them at the time) and forms the Teen Titans, and whenever there are Teen Titans there will be a Robin somewhere calling the shots.

Then in 1984 he decided he’d been the kid long enough (he had been wearing those little green pants for over forty years) and traded up to a big blue outfit and became Nightwing, an adult hero in his own right.

Current Status: Batman

Robin 2 : Jason Todd
As Dick moved on to his new adult role as nightwing, Batman discovered a young scallywag cunningly robbing the tyres from the Batmobile, though it’s never specified where he was thinking about fencing them. Finding out more about the kid as a street hoodlum he decided to take him in and train him up since he was feeling a little lonely.

As came as a surprise to nobody, Jason didn’t take to the job as lightly as Dick did and had a more grim take on the affair. Let’s not forget that we’re talking about comics here in the middle of the dark age; after the golden age and the silver age came the dark age with titles like Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns and V for Vendetta.
