Wraithguard Coming in Dawn of War Chaos Rising
Date: 20 Jan 2010
Relic games have announced the new unit for the Eldar race in their RTS expansion Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising; turns out it's a Wraithguard. These heavy infantry units are designed to be slow moving and have a self healing ability similar to the recently unveiled Tyrant Guard that requires the unit to "shut down" for a short period of time. It's assumed that they can still take damage and won't be providing a cover bonus like old Thule does in the singleplayer campaign.
The unit will become available at tier two, but the Wraithbone healing ability upgrade won't be researchable until you hit tier 3. That said, there is something you can do to improve this new Wraithlord inspired infantry, add a Warlock or Farseer to the squad. Nearby commanders, Warp Spider getting left out of this one, will cause the Wraithguard to see a significant speed increase, making them far more maneuvarable around the battlefield. Combine this with the fact that their D-Cannon inspired weapons don't have a setup time, and this could be one powerful squad.
Unfortunately I don't play Eldar much so can't say if the Wraithguard will fill a hole in the army's arsenal, but I've been on the end of a few D-Cannon shots in the past and I'm not looking forward to a more mobile version sneaking around behind me with a group teleport from the Farseer. One thing to take advantage of however will be their limited range, which should allow jump units or ones with teleporters to close in for some mellee which is likely to decimate the Wraithguards; as with nearly every other Eldar unit.
Since I'm playing an Ork army most of the time, this could mean I'm stuck with launching Stormboyz at them in the hope that they don't get cut down on landing or approach. That or teleporting the Mekboy in and popping on electric armour.
