Woolly the Jumper: A Sheep on the Edge iPhone App Review
The next four seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter), you are to help Woolly the sheep escape from Farmer Brown - who is intent on sheering your lovely wool coat! Farmer Brown is so desperate he will don a jetpack and will follow you across pitfalls, moving platforms, and much more.
Each season represents a different level, spring being the easiest with winter being the hardest. The first level, spring, is a tutorial of sorts. The game explains how to shoot Woolly to each platform and over obstacles by taking you step by step through the launching process.
Now included is a trajectory line in the spring level and a small hint of a trajectory line in the summer level. This was added to help ease the new players into the feel of the game. I believe this was to help the already steep learning curve.
The first level isn’t a problem, the game is enjoyable and keeps you entertained. It lasts an average of 5-10 minutes when you understand the concept. The second level is a wake up call when the trajectory line that was present is now just a very small guideline. This level is still not a huge problem and still can be slightly enjoyed.
When you reach the fall and winter levels you now have no trajectory line. The learning curve is extremely steep and takes hours to become comfortable with knowing just the right spot to hit to have Woolly land on a platform. It doesn’t help that in the winter level the platforms now are slightly ‘icy’ so Woolly happens to slide off a lot. Even if the platforms are not icy, Woolly still has a tendency to slide or fall off of platforms if you land too close to the edge.
During these 4 levels you have 26 seconds before Farmer Brown swoops down and sheers a layer of wool off of Woolly. This time can be affected in two ways. The first way being you can add 4 seconds on to your time for every other platform you land on. Secondly, every time you fall off a platform into the water seconds are subtracted. Four seconds are subtracted in the first level, five seconds in the second, six seconds in the third, and finally seven seconds in the fourth level. You do not have time to line up your jumps which has you missing platforms and reducing your time. If the time limit could be increased for each season that would help balance the difficulty of each level. Bonus items could be introduced for Woolly to collect to affect the time limit.
