Review:
WET, Grindhouse Presentation Amalgamated with Entertaining Brutal Action
INTRODUCTION
Wet, an acrobatic shooter, was developed by Artificial Mind and Movement, and published by Bethesda Softworks for both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. On July 29, 2008, Activision Blizzard announced that Wet had been dropped, along with a number of other games. However soon after, Artificial Mind and Movement announced the project remained in development and that it would be published by Bethesda Softworks. This was solely due to it being near completion. The game stars modish female heroine Rubi Malone, voiced by celebrity Eliza Dushku.
NARRATIVE
Wet drives players to a number of locations, the industrial Texas, America, the elegant Hong Kong, China and the gloomy London, Britain. Players assume the role of the ‘working class, jack daniels consuming, confident, tough, sexy, athletic, deadly, problem solver’ Rubi Malone. She lives in a chaotic world where excessive body counts are typical business. Her primary essentials are two mighty pistols, a sleek samurai blade and unmatched acrobatic skills. Rubi Malone, a ‘problem solver’, agreed to resolve a wealthy man’s (Mr. Ackers voiced by Malcolm McDowell) predicament, by locating and abducting his disobedient son. The assignment appeared more complicated than she presumed, and the man who hired her was not who he claimed to be. On the run and pursuing the man that deviously betrayed her, Rubi is leaving a significant body count in her wake.
VISUALS
Overall the visuals are not particularly stunning, especially considering the high standard of most current games. However, one significant aspect is its unique Grindhouse presentation. The game seems as though it is being projected in a 1970s cinema, the image visibly flickers and jitters and the player will notice vertical razor scratches as though it was pieced together in an old editing suite. The washed out colours add to the games distinctive gritty atmosphere.
SOUND
The game has a distinguishing soundtrack, primarily during the frenzied combat sequences. Unfortunately the sound effects aren’t as exceptional and lack realism. The voiceovers are high quality, however, essentially due to the game's celebrity cast, i.e. Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, Wrong Turn) and Malcolm McDowell (Halloween, Heroes, Fallout 3).
