Come and enter the Sushi Academy where the Sushi Master teaches you what you need to know about the traditional Japanese cuisine. But beware; every recipe you try to create will be closely monitored by the Sushi Master himself in hopes that you will succeed him.
Sushi Academy in essence is like the Cooking Mama series where you must cook and master recipes to beat the game. The main difference is that instead of just cooking and discovering new recipes to try out; the game will also educate the player in the art of sushi making and its history.
Ingredients like the sushi rice, wasabi, nori and vegetable decorative must be created in the kitchen in advance, before actually learning a recipe. The player should always check if there are enough ingredients in stock in order to learn or cook the recipe. If one of the ingredients is missing, the player will not be able to learn or cook it.
An exam will be unlocked every time a recipe is completed, but not necessarily perfected. Exams will test your knowledge of some of the recipes taught in the academy. If one of the steps got marked as fail, the exam will be cancelled and the player has to start all over again.
One of the great add-ons in this game is the Sushipedia. It teaches players the history of sushi; like when and where it was first created or what the well-known ingredients for sushi making are. The Sushipedia also explains the proper etiquette not only in eating but also in preparing it as sushi preparation is already a culinary art form. It goes to show that this staple food in the Japanese cuisine is popular all over the world.
Despite the game being educational and fun when it begins, the Sushi Academy’s only motivation on finishing the recipes is unlocking the different levels of examination. Other than that, there’s not enough incentive that might encourage the player in finishing and completing the game at all. Like in Cooking Mama titles for example, there are items that Mama can get and use when completing a set gold points. What Sushi Academy could've done is added unlockable perks or customizations that the player can enjoy while playing. Customizations like changing the background music, or items in the room of the Sushi Master can be re-arranged to suit the player's wants.
