Sonic Unleashed (Wii)

There was a time when Sonic the Hedgehog stood toe to toe with Mario on the gaming battlefield, just as respective developers Sega and Nintendo did in the console arms race. A lot of water has gone under the digital bridge since then, which is perhaps most acutely demonstrated by the fact that Sega is now a third-party developer for its former rival. While Mario has gone from strength to strength (not least with the recent Super Mario Galaxy), the Sonic franchise has recently suffered from a crisis of identity. Despite bringing some bold new gameplay initiatives to the table, Sonic Unleashed unfortunately does little to arrest this trend.
