Welcome everyone to 2010; or as I'm choosing to see it, the gaming industry's apology to RPG fans.
2009 was a pretty terrible year for us RPG fans, especially for those that prefer their dose of roleplaying from the Land of the Rising Sun. If I were writing a retrospective on the best RPGs of 2009, I'd be hard pressed to come up with 5 let alone 10 quality titles to write, and even then a fair chunk of them would be western in origins like Fallout3 and Dragon Age.
Thankfully, 2010 is a whole new beast. I've actually had to cut my list down by more than half just to keep it to a solid 10 titles. There really was nothing stopping me from going all out and listing every single last RPG I'm looking forward to, but that list would be somewhere around the 30 mark and realistically speaking, I could never get through 30 in a year.
To even entertain the idea of blazing through 30+ RPGs in a year I'd have to forgo showering (acceptable, gaming vs personal hygiene is a clear victory for gaming), ever leaving my home for any reason other than to buy more games (also acceptable, if I had my pick of worlds to live on I wouldn't choose one that orbits a BURNING BALL OF FIRE), and giving up MMORPGs to lighten my gaming load (logical, reasonable, and rational...but no). I'd also have to give up a few relatively inconsequential things like a social life, my fiancé, and school. All's fair in Love and RPG.
Regardless, it's unlikely to happen, so with that in mind I decided to cut this list down to something a bit more manageable. Besides everyone loves a good TOP 10 Internet list.
Please note however that this list is not sorted by any methodical means, it's completely random, and the release dates are not guaranteed to be entirely accurate. Also, I will only be listing games from the following platforms: Nintendo DS, Playstation Portable, Playstation 3, and the PC, platforms that I personally possess. I have never owned a Wii (nor been inclined to own one), and my Xbox 360 was an early model that suffered from the dreaded 3 Red Rings of Death. As such I decided, for the sake of intellectual honesty, that I'd only "hype" up games that I am likely to purchase myself, needless to say I won't be purchasing games I can't play.
