Nintendo's next-gen console?
Date: 24 Apr 2011
Project Café; the alias given to the next generation console brought to you by Nintendo. Although this has only surfaced via rumours and anonymous sources, it appears that this could be a very real development.
For lack of a better name, the Wii 2 as I am now going to call it is supposed to be designed around Nintendo’s old SNES system, but the spec is intended to be quite different. Rumours speculate that it will have more processing power than a PS3 projecting at a full 1080p with 3D capability. The controller design seems as if the Wii remote we all know is reverting back to a design similar to a gamecube control pad with an LED screen on the controller.
Playing a large part in connection to the Wii 2 is Mario visionary Shigeru Miyamoto but when questioned about the project he was giving nothing away. The name of the new console has not yet been revealed but some rumours say it could be called the Stream. Please Nintendo; don’t call the console the Wii Stream!

I'm sorry I asked my question the wrong way. It's too little too late for an HD console to be released. I don't think they're trying to forget about the Wii as much as they are trying to appease Wii critics by offering something for the "hardcore" gamers, but if people stopped to think about it there's not much more hardcore than a lot of classic nintendo games. I guess the announcement at E3 will be interesting to say the least

Personally I think it would be way too early to start thinking about the creation of a next-gen console. I don't really think the Wii's potential has been maxed out and until it has, I don't think another console should be given a second thought. With the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 new games are being released that amaze me with new technology and features the console can handle. This doesn't seem to happen with the Wii, and it's as if Nintendo are thinking next-gen as a way of forgetting about the Wii.

do you think that it is too little too late for Nintendo to be working on the next gen console? I ask this along with many other people concerned. For starters Nintendo has not been very good at supporting third party development, and the games they produce themselves do not require HD quality graphics. Mario isn't fun because they look pretty, they're fun because of their history with gaming and their simple game mechanics. That's not to say that HD wouldn't help games like Zelda, Metroid, or even Monster Hunter (one of my favorite Wii games), but it wouldn't help them so much that it would make Sony or Microsoft fanboys/girls jump over to Nintendo. Third party support will be critical and that's something that they have seriously been lacking.
