Nintendo Announces Successor to the DS
Date: 23 Mar 2010
A PDF available from the Japanese Nintendo website surfaced today making mention of a new handheld console that would succeed the incredibly popular Nintendo DS and all the subsequent versions of the Nintendo DS (DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL).Whilst not containing much in way of detail, it has been revealed that the new handheld console will be referred to as the Nintendo 3DS until a new name is settled on.
The apparent reasoning behind the name '3DS' is because this new handheld console will feature full 3D graphics without the need for 3D glasses.
The 3DS is said to feature full backwards compatibility with Nintendo DS games, suggesting that the 3DS will either also work off SD cartridges or it will feature an SD port that will read DS games. Whether or not it will also be compatibile with Game Boy Advance games has not been announced yet, but this seems highly unlikely.
With no other details yet available other than it's supposed debut is to be by March 2011, everyone's digging for information regarding this new mystery console. Nintendo have announced that they will be revealing far more information at this years E3 conference (To be held in California on June 15th).
Several years ago, before the launch of the Gameboy Advance, Nintendo spoke of wanting to create a home gaming console using holographic technology but were limited by how bulky the technology was. This newly announced 3DS may be a grab at that old dream of theirs.
