Left 4 Dead 2 Review: Back from the Dead

The first Left 4 Dead was a fantastically unique game that was a great time both by yourself and with friends. The sequel is, understandably, not as unique. It is still a good time both by yourself and with friends, though, and it makes a lot of improvements over the core game. If killing zombies is something you think you might enjoy doing, than this game is for you.

Left 4 Dead 2 is split into five campaigns. Each campaign holds three or four levels where you run from one safe zone to another, trying not to die. There are many variations to keep things different, like having to collect gas cans, or turn off alarms, etc.

While I’ve put a lot of hours into zombie killing, and it still hasn’t gotten boring, I must admit there really isn’t much else to the game. The game could have used more interactivity, more to do than killing zombies, and killing more zombies, and pushing a button so more zombies would come and you’d have to kill them too. The entire game is walking to places, killing zombies on the way, getting to places, activating something, killing more zombies, and getting to a safe room to do it all again in the next area.

But as I said, zombie killing is fun. It’s made even more fun in this game with the inclusion of melee weapons. Melee weapons are so effective, that I rarely ever use guns. There’s something satisfying about cutting off the head of a zombie with a hefty axe. Get puked on by a boomer? No biggie, get in a corner and start swinging. Melee weapons are stronger than guns, and you don’t need to worry about aiming or anything. Just sit back and watch the blood and limbs go flying. Good times.

*Cough* but anyway, so melee weapons are awesome. I do wish there was more variety between weapons. Besides the axe, you can swing a cricket bat, a billy club, guitar, or even a frying pan. The sad thing is all the melee weapons act the same way. They all do the same damage, which is somewhat startling. You wouldn’t think a guitar could cut off a head quite as cleanly as an axe, but it can. Still, watching someone kicking zombie ass with a frying pan is always a good time.
