Let's face it, Kirby's been hiding out for a while now. Aside from his brief stint in racing back in 2003 (Kirby Air Ride) and his appearances in the Super Smash Brothers series, Kirby's been a bit MIA, since about 2000. And I think that's a good thing. The last platforming adventure Kirby was in was the oh so mediocre Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and to be honest I thought that Kirby couldn't do any better. I mean, his mechanic and main "gimmick" if you will was sort of used up and washed out. There's only so many times that you can really inhale enemies before saying, "that's enough". Thankfully, Kirby Epic Yarn changes all of that, and more.
The first thing you're going to notice when you look at this game is its beautiful artsy graphics. Borrowing a dash of texture charm from LittleBigPlanet and a sprinkle of cartoony goodness from Yoshi's Island, Kirby Epic Yarn is a feast for the eyes, a textural wonderland in which every little detail is composed of yarn, buttons, or other sewing equipment. Developer Good Feel really took the idea and ran with it, and it shows. The yarn world isn't just all show and no play; it affects nearly all facets of gameplay. This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that needs to be done on the Wii. For a system that is definitely subpar on graphical capability when stood next to the PS3 or X360, developers for Wii games really need to focus on using a different approach, and this game definitely has it.
