Review:
iPhone App: Qrank
Despite the bizarre name, Qrank is actually a show of strong effort by creators to make something worthy of coming back to everyday. It’s a trivia game, but unlike most trivia games, it doesn’t have a question bank to take from at random. Instead it offers 20 brand new questions a day, to be answered at your leisure. The questions can be about literature, or entertainment, or ripped from the headlines.
For the most part, the questions are fantastically done. Considering the creators must come up with new questions everyday, rehashes are hard to find, and the occurance of poorly written questions are rare to never. The continuous quality of questions every day more than makes this app worth the modest asking fee, which by the way is free.
There’s more reason to play the game than just your own personal enjoyment. Your scores are posted on a leaderboard where you can compare your results to people in your area, in your state, nationally, or even globally. The ability to see how you rank with others around the world gives the game a competitive edge that should remain fun for a long time.
There is also an extremely long list of achievements that reward you for a very wide range of activities. Answer all your questions within 5 seconds each, achievement. Answer your questions in ten different states or provinces, achievement. Play the game everyday for an entire year, achievement. There’s enough to keep any motivated person busy for a long time, and having fun the whole way.
There is little to dislike about this app, though the first thing I did when I booted up the app was turn off the music. It blasted out at me so loud that I couldn’t imagine possibly answering questions with it being so distracting in the background. Also the time given to answer each question is a little too fast for my taste. A few times I’ve tried playing with other people, but found I didn’t even have time to read out the full question before the time was up.
Still, the app is a lot of fun, and if you have an iPhone there is no reason you shouldn’t pick it up. Trivia fans rejoice, finally a game that’s always fresh, and attractively free.
