User Blog: How I lost weight with the Wii

After Wii Fit came out, a number of lazy and under-exercised gamers flocked to the system in hopes of shedding a few pounds in the comfort of their living rooms. As most would come to expect, the Wii Fit game simply did not deliver. While it had good intentions, the game was flawed by a lack of seamless exercise "routines", cardio games that could only be referred to as balance-board gimmicks, and a over-inflated obsession with counting calories.

I must admit, I was lured into this trap myself. I thought, "What better a way for me to get into fitness than to bridge the gap with a videogame?" In the end, my balance board started collecting dust, and my Wii Fit game became nothing more than a glorified frisbee. I thought that the Wii could never grasp that intensity that fitness requires for you to be able to effectively lose weight, until I found Gold's Gym Cardio Workout.

I was baited into this product initially by the Gold's Gym name. The company itself has always been reputable both by fitness nuts worldwide and in my family, especially with my father, an avid weight-lifter and my personal "fitness guru". I decided I might as well take one more stab at it, and looking back I am extremely pleased to have done so.

The game is simple: Rhythm box your way to a healthier and leaner you. The game style is very similar to Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero/Rock Band in that the "notes" you have to hit come streaming up the screen. You can utilize either the nunchuk and Wiimote combo, or dual wield two separate Wiimotes for greater accuracy. I chose the latter, and began what I thought was going to be a grueling and mundane process.

I've never enjoyed exercise. Although as a kid I loved gym class, I hated the thought of running for 45 minutes. Who does that? I certainly didn't. But to my surprise, this game is almost hypnotizing in its methods to get you moving.
