Happy Birthday Sony's Playstation 2
Date: 4 Mar 2010
Ten years later, unbelievably, I still have my Playstation 2 up and running in my home. Not in my room though ( my Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 console have taken up all the room on my TV stand), but my old Playstation 2 still lives on in the spare room used as a dust gatherer and occasional DVD player when it’s needed. Yes, it has been 10 years since Sony launched the biggest selling console of all time, with over 140 million units sold since March 4, 2000 in Japan, before releasing in US in the following October and November in Europe. The successor to Sony’s original home console, which introduced players to the delights of DVDs, 8MB memory cards, and when they got round to it, online play. It took only until November 2005 when it was announced the Playstation 2 had released a staggering 100 million units sold in just less than 6 years, something that took nearly 10 years for the original Playstation to accomplish.
I enjoyed every minute I had with my Playstation 2 console, it never broke down on me and the variety of games that became available makes it still one of my favourite consoles I have owned. Remembering some of the classic games I used to play bring back some good memories, including when Grand Theft Auto turned 3D in GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas. Other games I enjoyed included Burnout, Devil May Cry, Manhunt and Max Payne. These titles may have had a sequel or two that can be picked up on the new generation of consoles but that doesn’t spoil the beauty of playing the original on a perfectly crafted console for its time.
I plan on celebrating this old console’s 10 year anniversary by sticking in a copy of Vice City to relive the memories of the consoles glory days.
