Force Unleashed (XBox 360)

Date: 27 Jan 2009
Star Wars. Since 1977 when beardy George Lucas debuted his funny little sci-fi film in cinemas, fans have fought tooth and nail to get their hands on anything remotely to do with the Force. T-shirts, lunchboxes, posters, action figures, books and eventually as the Eighties rolled around, videogames. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was the first ever game to be released based on the licence and came out on the Atari 2600. Tasked with shooting down an endless stream of AT-ATs it gave the hungry Star Wars fan base its first chance to relive one of the most dramatic moments from the films. For any fan, Star Wars games offer the chance to become the hero, to use the Lightsaber and fire that blaster. It’s just a shame that the quality of these experiences has sometimes left players clutching their pads glassy eyed and bottom lips quivering as they stare at their on-screen Jedi as they move erratically, arm part way through the wall. “Why won’t you jump! Use the bloody Force!” Safe to say the fans have been burnt. But like faithful Jawas they wait because every now and then when the moons align someone gets it right, and when Star Wars gets it right, it’s amazing. Knights Of The Old Republic is a case in point, further back than that the X-Wing series is another high point, and even Battlefront had its charms. When a new Star Wars game is released the fan base takes a collective breath as they wait for the news. There is, as they say, a disturbance in the Force.
