Cliffski Unveils new GSB Expansion
Our friendly Indi developer pal Cliffski has announced the release of another expansion for his exciting Space Strategy/RTS thing named appropriately "Gratuitous Space Battles".
This new expansion brings another race into the mix known as the Nomas. This proud "people" are apparently the oldest in the universe and have been galaxy hopping for as long as they can remember. However, it seems they've decided to stop in on the few races found in this particular galaxy to fire off a few missiles and lasers; show 'em who's boss.
This new release not only brings Nomads, but new weapons, ship designs and certain modules that are for travelling space races only. Cliffski hints that these will give them subtle advantages in specific cases. One of these will be the fact that while larger, and potentially easier targets, the Nomad ships will all benefit from a speed bonus, making them excellent for closing in on the enemy in a timely manner.
The new units include four cruisers, three frigates and three fighters all modelled by the man behind the original Gratuitous Space Battles art work. Influenced by retro cars, planes and art-deco of a retro future, these new ships also feature something that will please the slap-dash gamers out there; stolen technology. One thing the Nomads seem to like doing is cannibalising the technology of conquered enemies to suit their own needs, so expect to see guns and stylings of different races sitting proudly on the Nomad craft.
Some of the new modules include armoured power plants to help keep the ships going under heavy pounding from enemy guns, as well as some high volley laser beams combined with long range fast missile launchers for some interesting weaponry combinations.
In his usual humorous fashion Cliffski does let you know exactly what he's selling you, and what he's not:
"What The Pack does NOT contain:
Completely new gameplay modes, and major features that change how the game plays, any new AI orders... basically anything that is not listed in the list above. This is basically a data-pack with new ships, not a sequel or gameplay re-write."
Take what you're given and be happy dammit!
Pricing for the expansion is currently set at the traditional Positech expansion price of $5.99, but apparently those who consider themselves worthy of a discount can get it for the very low $2.99.
I'll be taking that discount. With these plugs I should be getting a free copy.
