Double Dragon, Golden Axe, and the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for NES; all great games that share one distinct feature: their side scrolling, arcade, beat-em up style of gameplay. Most gamers can say they’ve played something such as this growing up and it was one of those games they’ll never forget because it was that much fun, I know I can say the same. Sadly though, once the Playstation and Nintendo 64 systems hit, that genre of game began to die out and be replaced with an overhead style. Luckily for us, Ubisoft, the creators of games such as Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia have released Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game for the Playstation Network and Xbox Live arcade.

At first glimpse, you may be wondering: “A movie game that’s downloadable? Not worth my money”, but au contraire, as looks can be deceiving. Scott Pilgrim was a movie that featured a main character who loved video games and even featured numerous references throughout to famous games of our time. With that in mind, Ubisoft had to make sure they didn’t disappoint fans of the series who loved it for those references, and they did just that.

You'll find numerous game references such as this one in the character select screen throughout the game. Do YOU know what it's from?

Scott Pilgrim vs The World takes you back to your gaming roots by making it in the style of a classic arcade style beat-em up as I mentioned before. Ubisoft even took that extra step of nostalgia to create the game in 8-bit style graphics as shown throughout the original comic at numerous occasions. Fans of the series will be happy to know that every character from the original graphic novel makes an appearance in this, whether as a playable character, boss, or just background material; you’ll even find characters new to the series in this game such as a giant robot designed by the twins and a whole new level of Gideon’s story designed after the Mega Man levels with androids. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of Scott Pilgrim, if you grew up on a classic 8-bit gaming system this is a download you’ll want, and we haven’t even gotten to the gameplay yet.
