Budget Gaming Weekly #1 - A Brand New Beat

Welcome all! As you may have noticed, this is a new series in which I take you through the world of gaming at a reasonable price. In these rough economic times its important for all to manage their budget with rates of unemployment going up all around the world. But just because you have to spend less on your passion of video games doesn’t mean that you should sacrifice yourself to bad games, that’s only making a bad situation worse.

Luckily for you readers out there, I’ve become a master of budget gaming throughout my days of scrounging for the best prices on those video games that we all know and love. I didn’t even buy a Playstation 2 until I found one for less than $40 (and its worked perfectly throughout the time I’ve had it). Before I get on with the first review though, I’d like to give out a few tips on finding a game for a price that you’re personally reasonable with.

  1. Do some research! - Always check sites like AllTern or IGN for reviews on the game you’re wanting to purchase, that way you know you’re getting a great game and not just burning your hard earned money on a light paperweight. In most occasions I just search the “*game name* review” on google and look at all the relevant links I get. Multiple people can’t be wrong if they say its great or horrendous. Above all though, ask your close friends if they’ve played the game. Odds are if you’re good friends with them then they share similar gaming tastes with you.
  2. Know Your Sources - There are multiple places to hunt down your game at. The best place I’ve come to realize is any kind of used game store, such as a Game Stop (don’t know how prominent they are in the U.K.), the reason being is that they automatically lower their games to the lowest price they can sell it at while still making a profit (they do this using their own price database or a source such as Ebay). If you don’t have a local used gaming shop or your shop doesn’t have what you’re looking for then there’s always the magic of the internet. Certain sites such as Ebay, Craigslist, or any kind of used item site are great sources for finding any kind of used item at outrageously low prices if you look right.

Yeah, Gamestop isn't exactly the greatest source for cheap games unless you get lucky.

I personally use a privately owned shop called Disc Replay, I've gotten most of my DS games at about $10 a piece there.

We don't get GameStops here in the UK. We've got GAME and Gamestation.

It's not any better though ¬¬
