Battle for fastest selling IP for 2009 takes an interesting turn
Date: 19 Jan 2010
Back in November, Gearbox was touting its newborn Borderlands to be the fastest selling intellectual property of 2009. Their CEO Randy Pitchford even tweeted, “Getting reports from everywhere that Borderlands is selling out,” advising people to buy while they still can. However, of all the wonderful games to have come from the past year, Activision is now hailing DJ Hero to be the absolute best seller of 2009. The numbers don't quite add up, though. Borderlands sold well over 2 million copies in all of 2009, while DJ Hero barely scraped 350,000 between the months of October and November.
The important thing to remember is the price points for DJ Hero. Retailing at $119 as well as having a Jay-Z/Eminem inspired special edition of the game sailing at a whopping $199. Even though Amazon and other stores have heavily discounted the bundle to $89, that's still a hefty sum more than a $60 game in its own right.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick had this to say,
"DJ Hero has transformed music gaming by marrying an innovative turntable controller and exhilarating gameplay with the biggest artists and incredible music from around the world...Consumers and critics agree that DJ Hero is one of the best music games ever created and further establishes Guitar Hero as the premier franchise of its kind."
While I'm not sure that the Guitar Hero franchise is really all too "premier" anymore, I can agree that DJ Hero boasts a great amount of fun. Activision still has yet to release any conrete evidence to back up this claim, and I find it highly unlikely that it outsold Borderlands, but the price and amount of revenue generated has clearly given Activision reason to commit to the DJ Hero series.
What future DJ Hero titles would you be interested in? Would you want the series to simply generate sequels or focus on specific musicians/artists like the Guitar Hero series has done of late?
