A glance at new Alien vs Predator
Date: 28 Feb 2010
So I got to play around with the new AvP recently, and I have to say: I really didn't like it. I grew up with the original Alien vs Predator FPS (first-person shooter) on PC and the new Alien vs Predator just couldn't compare to its decade old counter-part. The sense of fear from playing the original games was intoxicating and it was badly re-incarnated in the latest Alien vs Predator. Replacing sheer fear with creepy sound effects and very artificial graphics had nothing on walking around long, dark corridors for so long only to suddenly find your screen filled with a Predator's mask and followed by sudden death. The new Alien vs Predator looks nice graphically and it was marketed incredibly well. The demo they released was enjoyable but short. I was prepared to download it off Steam, but prior to doing this I got the change to play it on a friend's PC. The experience was nothing like the demo.
Gameplay as the Marines barely captured the feel of horror survival. I was always in a one-sided battle of "Kill it with bullets before it gets too close" or "Don't kill it and die".
Playing as a Predator was more like I imagined it to be, stalking your prey and remaining as stealthy as possible using your abilities to their maximum advantage.
Playing as the Aliens seemed very artificial. You're left with no choice but to act as an Alien would: acting fast, never stopping and taking everything you possibly can down.
I went into the new Alien vs Predator expecting something like those old games I used to play, and was instead confronted with yet another over-hyped FPS with little new to bring to the table.
