TV and Film, Greed & Sequels

Some films are supposed to be written in separate parts. The original Star Wars trilogy had to be broken into three films because what George Lucas wrote for one was too long, but the fact that all the material was already there meant the films flowed seamlessly. More so than before, the last 10 years of the film and television industry has had a habit of getting greedy with initial success and making follow on films or programs that taint the view of the production as a whole by not doing justice to the original. So I thought I would write down a few productions that were polluted by continuation and why.

Lost (TV Drama)

For those who haven't watched Lost, it is a show about a group of strangers who meet on a plane that crashes on an island and strange things start to happen. When it first started it was a big hit both in America and the UK, the show seemed to have a really thought out story behind it and it had just the right amount of cliff hangers to always make you want to see the next episode. Unfortunately, with the success of the first season the show was stretched from it's original design as a three season series out to six. The final season is currently being aired in the US and the UK and I am watching it purely out of persistence to reach the end. If the show was left as three season series and the plot was kept tight, then I would remember it as a great show, however, I can only remember it as a waste of time.

Ocean's Eleven (Film)

Ocean's Eleven is a supremely entertaining, slick, sly, criminal congregation set on robbing the jackpot; a Las Vegas Casino. This film was nothing short of genius with a great cast that made everything feel so smooth and was good enough to make the full plot slip under your feet right until the end. Regrettably, "Ocean's Twelve" and "Ocean's Thirteen" were created after this, which for me, was a little bit of a gimmick. I enjoyed Ocean's Twelve a fair amount but I actually got bored and turned off Ocean's Thirteen because it had lost the plot in an effort to recapture what the first film had.
