Article: Them Crooked Vultures—After Months on Tour, Still Outperforming Themselves

Living legend may be an understatement for Them Crooked Vultures. With a line up like Dave Grohl on drums (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Alain Johannes and Josh Homme on guitar and vocals (Queens of the Stone Age), and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass and just about everything else, this group rocks.

The group has been on tour for over six months, traveling across the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.

Since beginning half a year ago, Them Crooked Vultures has expanded their set with bouts of spontaneous, improvisational jam sessions, says Alain Johannes.

That TCV has been playing together for over half a year was immediately apparent in Windsor. They appear at ease, feeding off one another during improvisation and encouraging solos. They even laugh and joke together on stage, with Grohl and Jones making off-hand comments to one another.

When asked about playing in Them Crooked Vultures, Johannes said, “I get to play music with old friends like John Paul Jones, who is amazing.”

Johannes stated he has a solo record coming out in August.

During the show, Homme mentioned his birthday was in twenty minutes and at another, teased Dave Grohl, saying to the crowd, “Alright let’s get this over for tonight…‘fresh pots’” (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhdCslFcKFU).

Along with improvisations, their set included solos from each band member, with smooth, coordinated transitions into songs. The music never seemed to stop—the band rolling seamlessly from song to song—and when the music did halt, Homme was there entertaining the crowd.

When asked if Them Crooked Vultures intends to record their improvisational work, Jones said, “No, but we should.”
