I’ve been saying since the beginning that The Vampire Diaries was like Twilight, but actually good. Some people have been asking me, “But Andrew, I don’t like Twilight. Will I like this?” My answer is yes. Other people ask, “But Andrew, I loved Twilight, will I like this?” My answer is oh god yes, your mind will be blown. Then there's another group that says “But Andrew, I like Sports, and Trailer Park Boys” and I honestly can’t recommend the show to them. But if you enjoy your quality television, or if you enjoy your vampires, you’ll enjoy this.
Since I last wrote on this series a lot has been going on. For those who think the story is simply about a girl who likes a guy, they should know there’s much more to it than that. There’s witches, there’s a secret conspiracy with the town’s founding members, there’s a group of vampires looking to take back the town.
The show focuses on the relationship between Elena and Stefan, and for a while their romance was the weakest link in the show. Stefan was too perfect. He was nice, and honorable, and never made a mistake. He had no flaws at all. That’s all changed recently as he’s tasted human blood and it has changed him. As Damon says at one point, he’s spent so long avoiding human blood out of fear that he didn’t spend anytime building his resistance to it.
Damon is Stefan’s evil brother. As time has gone by it’s become more and more clear that Damon isn’t evil at all, but really just self-serving. He’ll kill when someone gets in his way, but he also will practice restraint to stay out of trouble. He’s taken a liking to Elena, and it’s clear he wouldn’t hurt her no matter what. Ian Somerhalder plays Damon as a character with many layers that you can never be sure what he’ll do next. In that way any scene he’s in is a treat.
