Scott Pilgrim: A Review of Epic Proportions

Have you ever met that one person who you cared so much for that you would do anything to be with them? That’s exactly what happens in “Scott Pilgrim vs The World” when Scott, your average video game geek, meets Ramona Flowers, the girl of his dreams and has to fight her seven evil ex’s in order to win her heart. This film originally started as a independent comic series created by a Mr. Bryan O’Malley. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this series, I will try to leave out as many spoilers as possible, but just in case; if you have yet to see the film then stop reading this until you do so.
The most notable feature of the film from the trailers is its unique “comic book” style in which the words “POW”, “WOOSH”, and “THONK” appear in the manner they would in the original book. I was quite impressed with this but quickly thought that it would just be some gimmick that they threw in at random parts just to keep that feel going, much like the very first Batman series. Boy was I wrong. Literally within every shot of the film is filled these comic “action bubbles”, and if fits in so well that it becomes a part of the film itself and adds extra elements of humor and action that wouldn’t have been seen otherwise. In fact, during the parts of the movie where the main characters would flash back to their past experiences in high school and such, the format would cut to the exact illustrations from the graphic novel with the storyteller narrating it through the panels. I was honestly afraid these flashbacks would’ve been cut out, and it added background to Ramona’s personality so much in the books. The most intense example of these visuals had to be during the battle scenes in which the famous “action lines” would appear in place of the background as they do in various Anime’s or Manga to emphasize the motion. Based on the visuals alone, this film literally became one of a kind in the regard.
