‘That’s what you get, Steve, you ninja FUCK!’ – October

After a spectacular start comes this equally brilliant follow-through, continuing a few of the narrative threads laid down in the opening episode and setting up several new ones.

After being kicked out of his mum’s house, Jeremy has decided to camp out on the front lawn with all of his belongings, claiming that life outdoors is so much better than one inside. However, he soon realises that he needs to find some kind of employment after a homeless man tells him about giving blowjobs for money.

Meanwhile, October gets demoted as Raid Leader in World of Warcraft and goes to extreme lengths to get her post back.

It’s another great episode with a number of memorable moments that truly stick in the memory, such as a standout sequence where Jeremy becomes so bored in a job interview that he fantasises about playing Call of Duty in the office. It’s brilliant on several levels, one of which is that even non-gamers can understand what’s going on and find it funny. That and the blank stares of the NPC hostages – those are great.

October’s subplot adds on another layer to her character, showing the audience how passionate she is about Warcraft and why it is that people care about the game at all. It’s funny as all hell and reveals a previously unknown vicious streak to her that’s truly excellent.

There are also a few subtle jokes thrown in for the gamers with sharper eyes, too. Doug runs while holding a knife, a reference to Counter-Strike (and the line in the original series, ‘Everybody knows you run faster with a knife’.) There’s also the gag of Jeremy teabagging a downed enemy in the FPS fantasy, which adds on a few more giggles.

Even Kyle gets a great moment in amongst delivering exposition when he cracks up laughing at someone taking a crap in Jeremy’s tent. His hysterical laughter is far more infectious than it really should be.
