So, after two cracking episodes, you’d think that the pace would begin to slacken now, right? Wrong.
Now that Jeremy has a part-time job stacking shelves in a small convenience store, he’s been allowed to move into his mother’s basement and pay rent. When Kyle challenges him on his people skills and the fact that he’s never had a girlfriend, Jeremy claims to be able to get a girl to have sex with him within a week. So begins a competition for Jeremy to get ‘the sexes’ as he recruits Doug and October and the three hit the clubs.
To start with, this is absolutely hilarious from beginning to end, with no slowdown and absolutely stacks of character, all of which drive both the story and the laughs. A hysterical early shot of Doug playing Call of Duty in the Mouse and Pad, wearing sweat pants and getting a visible erection sets the tone for an episode revolving entirely around sex. From here it only gets funnier.
The main narrative is a fairly straightforward concept, but what makes this really stand out is that there’s no subplot. Instead, all the characters intertwine together to create a genuinely brilliant whole and there’s even a new cast member introduced here – pro gamer Tyrell, clearly based on Halo fan T-Bag from the original series.
The characters all grow and are afforded a huge amount of depth to show who they really are. October has been throwing hints at Jeremy since episode one and her reaction is perfectly logical – after Jeremy once again fails to pick up on her offer, she decides to come to the club to at least make sure he doesn’t embarrass himself. Doug has enough energy to really enjoy himself and make a lot of new friends, thanks to four glasses of energy drinks. Kyle observes and chuckles from a distance, but as soon as he has a chance, he’s in there like a shot. Even Tyrell has more to him than just being a gamer – he knows how the club scene works and dispenses advice for Jeremy to follow.
