‘Man, drumming is awesome! And since my dad moved out, my mom lets me drum on whatever I want!’ – FPS_Doug
After proving itself as a comedy name to be reckoned with immensely quickly, it’s time for Pure Pwnage to try a completely new approach with this ‘Behind the Music’ spoof.
Inspired by his brother’s hugely successful karaoke night, Simon decides to hold a ‘Rock Guitar Band Hero’ event at the Mouse and Pad. In order to take part properly, Jeremy allows himself to form ‘Teh Pwnerers’ with October, Tyrell and Doug. Unfortunately, Jeremy completely misunderstands the ‘for fun’ nature of the event and tries to force his band to take it seriously and go for the high score.
A curious episode, this one. While it’s amusing – and in some places, downright hilarious – the overall feeling is that it’s much weaker than the previous three episodes were. There isn’t really that much going on in this one.
Naturally, Doug shines the brightest in the episode, capturing a number of really excellent scenes that dig a little deeper into his character, like the idea that drumming is a new way to work out his constant aggression. It’s a marvellous case study of games as a passive-aggressive tool, but it’s such a shame that we don’t get the chance to really find out why October and Tyrell play games. After all, we know that Jeremy plays them to win and for the ego boost that it provides.
Doug’s hilarious mum also returns for a couple of brilliant scenes, but quickly gets forgotten, which is a shame. She really could be used more by this show to provide some background comedy.
There are a few nice character touches, albeit small ones, like Kyle pouring compliments all over October and Simon’s complete disregard for anything other than the money his business makes. If only more were done with this things, the episode would be as good as the past few have been.
