108: Pwnageddon (Season Finale)

‘I come here every year just to hang out and play a few games. I’m always blown away by how sausage this place is. I mean, ‘sausageageddon’ doesn’t even describe how sausage the situation in here is. Let’s just call it sausage.’ – Tyrell
So this is how it ends. After seven episodes of up-and-down (but mostly very, very ‘up’) misadventures and gaming fantasies, Pure Pwnage has come to the end of its first (or is it third?) series. With the first season of the original series ending on an absolutely magnificent cliffhanger, this finale is strangely underwhelming, although still a satisfying pay-off.
It’s been hinted since the first episode, but now Pwnageddon is finally here and Jeremy is looking to continue his reign as the king of Street Fighter IV, training hard and fast with October and rocking Call of Duty 4 with Doug. With Pwnageddon kicking off in just a few hours, nothing can stop Jeremy. Nothing, that is, except for a drug trafficking charge courtesy of stoner colleague François.
Meanwhile, Doug feels that he’s mastered control of guns in videogames and begins looking for the next logical step – something that the local army recruiters are only too happy to help him with.
It’s a curious episode, this. While initially it sets up to convince you that Jeremy’s troubles are only just beginning from the off, it actually sideswipes the viewers by immediately disregarding the problems and carrying on as usual. The first act ends with Jeremy being arrested for accidentally possessing marijuana, only for the second act to begin by getting him out of hot water instantly. While this is a trick Jarret and Geoff have used before – to excellent effect in episode five – that was then instantly paid off with a brilliant joke, making the set-up worth it. In this, nothing happens. It seems more like filler than material, especially as it isn’t funny.
