Movie Remakes of 2010

Who would not want to see their favorite childhood movie being remade on the big screen? Well, here is your chance, as 2010 will be a year of movie remakes. To give you a glimpse of what films to look forward to, I will be writing in series some of my personal favorite movies to be retold this coming year. First, let’s talk about Freddy.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

“Whatever you do, don't fall asleep…” These are the words that haunted the imagination of millions of moviegoers that saw the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie when it hit the big screen during the 80's. The film catapulted to become one of the most popular entries on the horror genre and made the character Freddy Kruger one of the most feared villains in cinema history. The film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the LA Times on a group of Cambodian refugees who, after fleeing to America from Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime, were suffering horrific nightmares, after which they refused to sleep. Some of the men died in their sleep soon after. Medical authorities called the phenomenon Asian Death Syndrome.

Writer and director Wes Craven ruptured the boundaries between the imaginary and reality by toying with audience perception. The original film was set on a fictional Midwestern town of Springwood Ohio, with its plot revolving around several teenagers whose dreams are haunted by a serial-killer who wears a glove with four blades embedded in its fingers, and kills people in their dreams, resulting in their death in reality.

In the film's remake, we will take a journey to the world of Freddy Kruger and learn about his death, how he was killed, and the predicaments that spawned him to become evil. This time around, Kruger will be played by Jackie Earle Haley, an equally talented actor to his predecessor Robert Englund, and Rooney Mara as Nancy Thompson, originally portrayed by Heather Langenkamp. To be released on April 30, 2010, it is written by Eric Heisserer and Wesley Strick, directed by Samuel Bayer, and produced by Michael Bay (yes, he is again doing another remake, after the box-office hits Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller. With a production budget of $27 million dollars and a powerful cast of celebrated actors, the remake is expected to equal the terror brought by the original film.
