iPhone 4gs Issues: Jailbreaking, Signal Loss
The official announcement has now come, Apple's new iPhone 4GS has beenjailbroken. This is impressive as this phone came packing the company's latest iPhone OS 4 which was supposed to be far more secure.
The operating system was purportedly hacked to pieces a few days before the launch of the iPhone 4GS, with the team behind it even taking the time to update their PwnageTool which makes it far easier for other users to break their phones.
Even with this tool though, the team made sure to tell people that that they, "shouldn't have upgraded your devices if you have previously relied on our tools for hacktivation and/or a carrier unlock." They make this clear, because running an update after breaking the phone could cause problems for the software.
A similar tool has also been released from a different team however, this one known as Sn0wbreeze. While it is designed to work on the Windows platform, both tools work in similar fashions in that they create custom IPSW files on the target device to circumvent Apple's restrictions.
Anyone running an original iPhone, iPod touch or a third gen iPod Touch are recommended not to use this particular upgrade.
This will not be good news for Apple, who despite selling a lot of their new smartphone, have taken some flak from users who are having big problems with the signal strength of their new phones. Cleverly, Apple placed the aerial on the side of the phone and gave it a metallic surface. The problem with this is when you hold the device with even remotely sweaty hands you'll cause a connection and your signal will drop right down, making the phone unusable if held in certain ways.
Steve Job's emailed response to one user was rather simple, "Just avoid holding it that way." The official statement from the fruity firm is a little better, but apparently all phones have this issue, despite no one registering this problem with the latest handsets from other companies.
