Review: Doctor Who: Christmas & New Years Eve Special Review

Doctor Who is said to be the longest running science fiction show of all time. Coming from a Canadian, I honestly believe it’s tied with Harry Potter for the best thing to come out of Britain. It follows an immortal time traveler named simply the Doctor, as he travels through time and space in his TARDIS.

Another milestone with the show is its main character and namely how many people have played him. More than James Bond, ten different actors have played the infamous Doctor over its long life. It’s become a tradition that when one actor moves on, the character “dies” and is then regenerated in a new form.

The Christmas/ New Years 2 part special was one of these milestones. The end of one doctor to lead into the beginning of the next. Unfortunately David Tennant has been one of the most loved doctors since Tom Baker. Nobody wanted to see him leave, but despite that we all knew it was coming. It had been predicted earlier in the season, and referenced many times. The Doctor was going to die and soon. And he would knock four times.

Or something like that. To be honest, it’s always been kind of hard to follow Doctor Who stories. I’ve often found his story lack a level of logic that you find in other sci-fi stories. But that’s not the point of Doctor Who. It’s the charm of the Doctor that brings you back every episode. And it’s David Tennant’s charm that saves this finale.

The Master is back. For those who don’t know the Master is the Doctor’s arch nemesis. And this is all sounding like a Saturday morning cartoon. Anyway the master has some insidious plan to end the world, and only the Doctor can stop him. He’ll face death, and the return of his uncompassionate super race the Time Lords.
