Review:
Chuck: Super Spy or Super Awesome
Chuck has been a rocky show. It’s been consistently entertaining, but I found it took much of the first season to truly figure out what it was trying to do and get into its groove. While the first season had some good episodes, the second season really upped the ante and made the show a much better watch. On the third season now, the creators allowed the show to falter, but they must have seen what I’ve seen as since the past couple episodes it seems things are coming back on track.
Chuck follows the story of a normal Geek Squad (Or Nerd Herd in this show) employee named Chuck (Zachary Levi). He gets a CIA database streamed into his head, and suddenly every spy organization on the planet wants to either use him or kill him. He meets the beautiful and eventual love of his life Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski). She’s a CIA agent tasked with protecting him. He also befriends the grumpy and dangerous John Casey (Adam Baldwin) as Sarah’s partner.
Things have changed by the third season. Now Chuck has an upgraded version of the software in his head that allows him to flash on different skills he can use, including Karate. Suddenly he went from a geeky asset that needed to be protected, to a geeky asset that could quite easily protect himself. It was a great new direction to go into, and has been a fun ride except for a couple things.
I suppose the creators figured Chuck needed more love interests so they created Special Agent Shaw (Brendon Routh of Superman fame) for Sarah and Kristen Kreuk as a new employee at the Buy More for Chuck. The only problem is that no one wanted to see those two dating other people.
The creators quickly took note of this, and within like four episodes Kristen Kreuk was gone. Brendon Routh lasted longer, but then again he was a much more interesting character. While he did seem to be in the way, his story panned out to be an interesting one, and the conclusion of his story was a fantastic way to put the show back on track.
The creators did make some good changes as well. They recognized that too many of the main cast had been sitting in the dark with nothing to do. They told Devon, AKA Captain Awesome, Chuck’s secret and then included him on a few missions. Awesome’s stories this season have been a blast, and it was great seeing a good character like his finally given something to do. Secondly they told Chuck’s secret to his best friend Morgan. While Morgan has been really annoying, he’s really taken to the spy life and it’ll be humorous to see where things go from here.
