Interview:
An Interview with Wolf Sharman and Asha Tank
Recently I had the chance to get an interview with Wolf Sharman and Asha Tank, well known for their work with the Dark Arts agency and especially well known in Staffordshire for the club nights that they run. Wolf and Asha have been running club nights for the alternative scene in Staffordshire for the past few years.
So, how did you get into hosting club nights?
Wolf: Well, I started out at bike rallies working in administration.
Asha: I was organising and DJing for my own night, Electric Head, a couple of years before we got together.
Wolf: I'd been running the local rock pub for a couple of years when I was asked to help out with a new rock night which in time would become Devil's Night. Me and Asha came together to work on it and we decided from the start to jump in heels first and treat it like a proper business.
Asha: We got performers from Download festival to work with us: Stilt walkers and fire breathers outside to get people interested and professional dancers inside the club to keep people entertained.
Wolf: The guys who asked us to help out eventually ended up dropping out and me and Asha took over completely.
How many club nights do you run then?
Wolf: Apart from sundry individual nights, there's Devil's Night, Electric Head, Saturdays at the Vic, Cocoas Bar, Underdog and Voodo Lounge, so six major nights.
How much time and effort goes into planning and preparing for a club night?
Asha: Too much, since we have to plan it on the side.
Wolf: Far more than people think.
Asha: I do all the flyers and web advertising. I also go around making sure everywhere has flyers.
Wolf: I manage the bar stuff and word of mouth.
Asha: There's preparing artwork and getting the word out there. Deciding on a costume theme is important as well, since we don't want to pick something that people would have to pay an arm and leg for.
