Video Games as Movies: The Best Contenders
The video game and movie industries have been intertwined for years. This can be seen far into the past. The SNES, for instance, had game tie ins to E.T and Total Recall. But in only in recent years have video games become movies. Take Tomb Raider, for example. The game debuted back in 1996, and since then, the game had two huge successes in the box office (thanks to the woman who played her).
Since then, rumors of blockbusters like Halo and Metal Gear turning into movies have certainly gotten around. Many gamers have wanted their favorite game to come out in theatres, and it is certainly possible with the special effects technology that we have today.
But what games can actually work as movies? I know that we can actually make anything now today, but certain games might not work in the live action setting. Take Pokémon for example, it just won’t work as live action. The human characters can in no way live up to their animated counterparts. That being said, I could think of some games that can be turned into good movies.
Indigo Prophecy is an excellent choice, because it was like a movie itself. This thriller released in 2005 and featured a man who commits murder subconsciously. The game branched out by letting you play different characters but in the same time frame. This let the gamer experience the same event from different perspectives; very movie like indeed. But this game is based off reality, so this should be easy to pull off, and the story is a fast paced thriller. Thrillers always make good amount in the box office.
Gears of War is another good example. Monsters can be easily made with CGI. And a game like this equals a major summer block buster. Alien invasion and Hollywood have always been good to each other. Gears of War had many cinematic scenes in which huge monsters attacked humans that have guns. Who wouldn’t want to see that in a movie?
Assassins Creed can be a heavy contender to be made into a movie. Although time traveling and medieval times have been shown (i.e Timeline), Assassins Creed takes on a fresh perspective of this idea. When a man is forced to relive the events of his kick-ass ancestor, things could get dicey (especially if said ancestor sports blades hidden within his sleeves).
