Review: A Review of the New Star Trek Film and DVD

I eagerly anticipated the latest film in the Star Trek franchise, and ventured out to see it in IMAX opening weekend. When it was released on DVD this week, I picked it up the very first day it was out. I really liked the movie when I saw it theaters, and I like it even more after watching it again for the first time in a few months.

That being said, the latest Star Trek movie did have some flaws that still bother me. Frankly, I had some issues with some parts of the film. Despite all that, I can still sit back with friends and enjoy the experience of watching it again and again. It will sit proudly on my DVD shelf, next to all the Star Trek movies that came before it.

Before I dive into my review of the movie and the DVD, I do want to point out that this does contain spoilers, just in case you still haven't seen this movie for some crazy reason, but are reading reviews of it anyway.

Let’s start from the beginning: the opening sequence of Star Trek is breathtaking. It is emotionally gripping, visually stunning, powerful, and heart pumping. I still get the chills when the Starfleet delta symbol finally spins into view, and the soundtrack starts kicking. It is easily one of the best opening sequences of any science fiction film I've seen to date. I could watch that part over and over. It remains one of my favorite parts of the movie.

I am still amazed at the incredible job the casting directors did with Star Trek. Every time I see Karl Urban, I crack up with laughter, because he's such a perfect Leonard H. McCoy. I can honestly say that I think DeForest Kelley would have approved. It's like Karl was channeling him or something.

Zachary Quinto was a great Spock, and he delivered a lot of lines that could have been straight from Leonard Nimoy’s mouth. The moment that was most “Nimoy-like” for me, was when he spun around in the pilot's chair of Spock Prime's ship, and said “fascinating.” The other actors all did commendable jobs as well, but Urban and Quinto were the two big stand outs for me.

As for the movie as a whole, it was action packed, exciting, and fun. The dialogue was witty and delivered in a way that felt believable and genuine. The redesign of the ship and uniforms was slick and modern, but still offered a nice homage to the original. I squealed (on the inside) like a little girl when they used some of the original series sound effects for various chirps and device noises. The way the ships went to warp was beyond cool.
But as I mentioned, not everything was perfect. Here were some of my concerns and complaints:
