I’m a huge fan of Diablo Cody. I know, it’s probably slightly early to be saying that as she’s only done two movies so far (Juno, this), but she gets what’s important in scriptwriting. There’s a very Whedonish feel to her writing. Sure she comes up with weird words for things, but it’s by keeping us off guard and making us think “Wait, did she just say she was salty?” that keeps us so involved in the movie.
So yes, I’m reviewing Jennifer’s Body. It’s a horror film about a really hot Megan Fox becoming a succubus and feeding on the flesh of sexually charged high school boys (So nothing new there, am I right boys?). It came to theatres a good long while ago, but it’ll be coming on DVD on the 29th and so for those who haven’t seen it, you might be wondering “Should I?”
I found the movie to be very entertaining. As I’ve already showed with my love letter to Diablo Cody, the writing was top notch. It’s rare to compliment a horror movie on its top notch writing, as the genre has seen so much crap. Hell, going into most horror movies, I’d have to turn off my brain to fully enjoy them, but this movie isn’t like those other movies. You can leave your brain on as you enjoy the carnage of what’s going on. There’s so much witty irony and subtle plays on ideas and images that you just don’t find in other horror movies.
Not that I’m saying the plot is deep, because it really isn’t. The twists aren’t exactly surprising either, this movie is more about the success of the small things, even as it fails in the overall picture. The movie is very predictable at spots, and the ending leaves a lot to be desired.
