Review: Warhammer Online, my online home from home

There are few games that make me go misty eyed and sigh while staring into space as blue birds fly around the room, flowers sprouting from every surface and a warm, welcoming voice calls me forward into big open arms with promises of chocolate pudding as I skip towards that source of pure delight.

Warhammer Online is one such game that fills me with emotions that could only begin to be expressed through the medium of interpretative dance. Way back when, before the release of Warhammer Online, all of my friends were playing World of Warcraft (pre The Burning Crusade) and I was adamant that I could wait for the release of a new game and be at the same level as everyone else. Eventually, after set backs a plenty, I caved in and bought World of Warcraft, all the time waiting and wondering what Warhammer Online would bring.

Weeks, months, in fact, passed peacefully in Azaroth. I reached both maximum class and crafting level, and it felt like a true achievement. I worked, neigh, slogged through my crafting skill. It was hard work, but satisfying at the end. Everything I needed to craft, and anything I had crafted at the end was easy to both buy and sell on the auction house.

Things eventually grew stale. I'd seen all the PvE content I wanted to (every one always needs a good healer) and PvP only ever really felt like a distraction. Other then tokens you won after the scenario, there was no real reward. No experience and very little cash, it just didn't seem worth while, that and the fact you had to visit the Battle Master if you wanted to join a battle ground scenario so you couldn't stray too far away.

But by far the worst thing was the twinks. For those that have never played World of Warcraft, a twink is a character that never goes above a certain level, will have all the best equipment and enchantments and only ever plays because they know they can win easily. The problem is that takes all the fun out of the game. I have played in matches where all of my team would focus fire on a twink and never actually do enough damage to kill them, so we would always lose, regardless of what we did.
