Star Trek Online: More Content Announced

Date: 26 May 2010
To prove that the Cryptic Studios appear to be listening to their fans (and that whinging on their official forums does appear to work after all) Star Trek Online's Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich recently posted a summary of up-coming game developments online.

The first half of the post is quite frankly old news, but the items he has listed under 'Season 2' do make for interesting reading.

Minigames and diplomatic missions will both be extremely welcome additions for the many fans of the game that were disappointed with the Trek experience offered by the game at launch.

And for the hardcore players who have already hit the ceiling of character progression since launch, the level cap in the game will soon be upgraded by six levels to Vice Admiral 1.

Being able to walk around your ship's interior will also be nice, but one can't help feeling that this will be a purely cosmetic modification with no real impact on gameplay or your missions.

Most curiously I see Craig has also made reference to user-generated content, an issue I put to him a couple of months ago myself in an interview for Alltern8 which he said was unlikely to happen due to issues of IP and licensing.

If the reference is actually to do with holodecks, I wonder whether he's realised that such content doesn't need to be Trek-themed at all - the best holodeck episodes from the shows were Picard's noir detective stories, DS9's Vegas-style lounge and Paris's crazy B-movie world.

Here's me with my fingers crossed, hoping for the best...
