How to Guide:
Make Better Effects: Part 1 - Making a Fog
Hello fellow LARPers. When I try to describe LARP to other people I tell them it's an open theater that looks like a 60s fantasy movie. I would like to talk about how to make it at least a 70s movie and let it still be a cheap way of making visual effects and props.
First of all we need to ignore the props the players have, meaning the equipment and let's say that they look somewhat according to the setting.
Fog/smoke
To make a mystical scary atmosphere, a fog is always a good idea.
So what you need is too make a smoke screen and distribute it in a way so it is lightly visible when you are in it yet that it doesn't make the player choke.
Warning: Be sure that there are no people with astma, and if there are, try to make another paralel quest line for them.
NO3 and sugar is a very cheap way to go and make a fog.
You will need:
-NO3 8 g
-sugar 6 g
-frying pan
-fire
-food color (if you want smoke in color) 3 g
-bicarbonate sodium 1.5 g
-foil
-fuse
You need to mix all the ingredients in the correct ration as shown on the list. If you want to make more just use the same ratio with more ingredients. You should keep heating and easily mixing the ingredients until they look like peanut butter jelly. Turn the heat off and put the substance in a foil shaped like a small cup.
Let the substance get thicker then put a fuse on it.
Now you got yourself a smoke maker.
How to use:
Since you are in nature and a lot of things are flammable, make a little spot where you will put the smoke maker. Somewhere with dirt around. Construct a small ground patch for the smoke maker and put rocks around it. This way when you light the fuse and the fire starts to go wild everybody is protected by the rock above it yet at the same time the smoke maker has air to oxidize and make more smoke.
It is stylish to see colorful mystic smoke come out of a small patch in the ground.
