LARP Plot Tips: Understanding Player Archetypes

I've mentioned in previous posts the importance of knowing your players. It gives you the ability to both cater to their likes as well as lead them by predicting their actions. The problem is that some games are simply too large for you to become friends with every player.

If you don't know your players on a personal level, the best thing you can do is identify their player archetype. From my time running LARP games, there are 5-6 major archetypes (depending on the system you're using.)  Here are some descriptions as well as what to focus on and what to avoid with the various archetypes.

Soloist
Look For: People doing modules by themselves and avoiding others, not necessarily shy.
These people are the lone wolves of LARPs. They tend to do as much as they can on their own without help from others. The problem is that they tend to hoard information.  These people are not necessarily shy, it's just that for some reason they think they're the only one who can save the world.
Focus: Heavy thought, light combat modules with very little or no incapacitate effects.
Avoid: Giving them any important pieces of information that no one else has that are intended to be shared with others.

Social
Look For: Friendly people interacting in large groups and talking with multiple teams.
These people thrive on the social interaction and roleplaying aspects of the game. They often like to bounce from group to group and keep up with everyone.  A lot of these people continue to come to games simply for the social interaction, even if they're not wrapped up in the immersion of the game anymore.
Focus: Large group modules, puzzles, and scavenger hunts.
Avoid: Modules that limit the amount of people who can come, boring combat modules.

Roleplayer
Look For: Highly intricate costumes and people staying in character all the time
These people truly come to the game for an immersive experience where they can be a different person. Story and visuals are what keep this player coming back.
