In a perfect world, everyone on your plot team would get along and each person would pull their weight. Unfortunately, things hardly ever end up that way. People simply have different goals, priorities, and aspirations, so it doesn't mean someone who doesn't perform is a bad person. But if someone is bringing down the quality of your game or preventing your plot from being all it can be, it might be necessary to let that person go.

So how do you do it without offending the person or breaking friendships? Here are some things you need to keep in perspective.

Talk Before Acting
I'm sure you're all sick of reading it, but communication really is key. If you think one of your plot team members isn't pulling the slack, talk to them about it. Find out what might be the cause. Worst case, you'll find out that their real life is keeping them from performing to their fullest, or that they're just the kind of person who looks for excuses. Best case, you'll light a fire under them to perform better, or they'll ask you for help in the areas they know they need improvement. It's much easier for everyone if you can fix your plot team rather than replace it.

Give Them Notice
So you tried talking and it didn't work. Now you're stuck with the tough task of starting the process to replace them. Make sure you let them know that you're replacing them, and try to time it well and give them plenty of notice. The most ideal time to flip your team is between seasons, but make sure you tell the offending parties well before then, so they can get all their plot wrapped up, or at least on paper so you can finish it.

Keep It Discrete
The only people who need to know they were kicked off the team is the rest of your team. Tell them in private, and let them tell others that they're stepping down rather than being kicked off. These people are still going to be playing the game, and it does you no good to rob them of their dignity. Fight the urge to gossip!
