Article: Attractive LARPers and Misunderstandings

Alright. I’ve seen this MULTIPLE times and I think it’s time to speak out. Being an active and attractive LARPer myself, I’ve also been on the receiving end of these crazy and sometimes cruel misunderstandings.

What the heck am I talking about? You’re an attractive LARPer (either male or female, yes I’m including you guys too!) you’ve attended a LARP long enough to make a name for yourself and get the attention of every other LARPer in the game. You’re on top of the world! The attention is intoxicating and you can’t get enough of it. Until you catch wind of the rumors… about you.

Why is it when you’re getting the right kind of attention people need to say the wrong kind of thing? You know what I mean…

“She’s sleeping with him. AND him. AND him.”

“He’s a player and will sleep with anything that moves.”

“She’s a frigid unfeeling Ice Queen.”

“He’s a smooth talking jerk.”

Now I’m not saying that there AREN’T people out there that take advantage of people at the LARP, but there is no reason to expect every. Single. Attractive. LARPer to do that.

These rumors become so bad that the person who is the target of all these ‘misunderstandings’ is forced to move on to either a new LARP, continue suffering at their current LARP or to drop LARPing entirely. There is no reason people need to begin these rumors, comments… misunderstandings. How would you feel to hear these things about yourself when you don’t deserve them? When the worse possible thing you’ve done is smile and act friendly to everyone!

So, are any of the LARPers in the photos actually supposed to be attractive? Particularly the guys...

Well, you'll have rumors everywhere: At the office, at sports, even in your religious community. It just way to human to talk about others...

That's why I don't LARP. Cause of the rumours. And the fact I've never found a larp in my area. And I'm not attractive. Nor am I a particularly creative costume designer. And I'm not too social. Or bright. Or geeky enough to hang with other geeks. They're always more geeky than me.

Great advice! The rumor mill is one of the least attractive things at most LARPs. I definitely agree that it's better to do without those rumors.
