What is ‘LARP’ or Live Action Role-Playing you may ask ?
LARP is an acronym for Live Action Role Playing. It is a type of interactive gaming where the players take on a character just like they were playing a part in a play. They then stay ‘In Character’ for the duration of the game whether this is a few hours a whole day or many days. The game conforms to a scenario which is written by the Herofest referees. Many scenarios are written to allow for individual decisions made by the characters to alter the events or outcomes. The main difference between a LARP game and a play is that there is no pre written script for you to memorise, it is all improvisation. You are not restricted to what you can say and do, however following the actions taken by the players there will always be consequences .
There are rules to many LARP games which allow for combat to take place between the participants. Herofest is one such club and full rules can be found by following the link here – http://www.live-roleplaying.co.uk/live/action/roleplaying/rules/liveactionroleplaying-rules.htm
The first live role playing club was called Treasure Trap which ran at the ideal location of Peckforton Castle in Cheshire UK. When this closed down in 1984 a number of clubs around the UK sprang up and now there are hundreds of groups clubs and businesses all over the world. When it first began it was know as LRP or Live Role Playing, but as the years have gone by it has slowly become LARP or Live Action Role Playing.
As a live action role playing system, Herofest includes aspects of both combat and theatre.
